UMA disowns endorsing Museveni for 2026 Presidency

By Website Writer; The Uganda Medical Association (UMA) executive has distanced itself from the incident in which Dr. Odong Samuel Oledo (UMA president) led other doctors to endorse H.E YK Museveni for another term in office.

This was on Saturday, December 3, 2022 at Kololo Independence grounds during the Patriotism For Youth and Investment Symposium, where Dr. Samuel Odongo Oledo and colleagues knelt before ask President Museveni hailed him and requested him to contest again in 2026, sparking an outburst on social media.

Speaking on NBS TV, Dr. Ekwaro Obuku okayed the act by medical doctors especially President Museveni having fulfilled his promise of 2016 to make the least paid doctor rise from Ugx.1M to 5Million.

The President fulfilled his promise of 2016 that a doctor earning UGX 1 million should earn UGX 5 million. That’s the lowest paid doctor. Kneeling down is what annoyed some people but it is culturally appropriate in Buganda,” Dr. Ekwaro Obuku told NBS Moring Breeze.

However, it’s a controversial story for the medical association as it claims not to be pat of its President’s views.

Dr. Herbert Luswata, UMA General Secretary stated on Monday that their President Dr. Oledo didn’t appear as member of the association but rather a member of the ruling party, National Resistance Movement (NRM).

He also revealed that President Oledo claimed to be speaking on behalf of the medical doctors in Uganda but he had only mobilized interns from the medical school, masquerading as doctors.
