Makerere University graduates over 12000

By Website Writer; Makerere University’s 72nd graduation ceremony kicked off yesterday, Monday, May 23, 2022.

The five-day ceremony will see about 12,000 students graduating in various disciplines.

The President of the Republic of Uganda H.E YK Museveni virtually presided over as the guest of honor at the ceremony as the institution is also marking 100years of its existence.

Through a live broadcast from State Lodge Nakasero – Kampala, President Museveni was in company of his wife at the same time Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Janet Kataha Museveni.

President Museveni commended the University for emphasizing and focusing on developing the science industry of the country.

Mama Janet Museveni and I attended the 72nd Makerere University Graduation Ceremony virtually. At the same time, the institution is marking its centenary anniversary. I salute the University for prioritizing science for solutions in our society. You are indeed building for the future,” H.E YK Museveni stated.

Prof. Ezra Suruma, Chancellor of Makerere University hailed parents and guardians for their endless commitments in educating their children amidst all challenges.

I congratulate the parents, guardians and sponsors upon making it to this day and thank them for the sacrificial support. Please continue to cherish your parents, guardians and sponsors who have sacrificed so much to help you reach this milestone,” Prof. Ezra Suruma said.

The Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe said that Uganda’s best University comes second in Africa when it comes to research output.

He also likened Makerere University’s caliber to United States’ oldest institution of higher learning and the most prestigious in the world, Harvard University.

Makerere is now ranked 2nd in Africa in terms of research output and we rank highest globally as far as clinical research is concerned. I said that Makerere can compete with Harvard, but the truth is we are ranked higher in clinical research,” Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe said.

Prof. Nawangwe also asked parents, guardians and well-wishers to cooperatively make contributions to the University’s 100th anniversary celebrations.

On this auspicious occasion of the 72nd Graduation Ceremony, I wish to remind our graduands, parents, guardians, development partners and well-wishers that Makerere University is #MakerereAt100 of excellent service to humanity. As you leave the gates of Makerere today, I invite you and your parents and guardians to join all those who have already made individual and corporate contributions to #MakerereAt100 Celebrations both in cash and kind, by making your personal contribution. Let us emulate the men and women who laid our foundation by Makerere’s agenda for the next 100years.”
