Following the recently concluded 2021 chaotic polls, the Kampala district parliamentary representative seat has had a number of sagas between the two competitors that led to dragging of the incumbent Muhammed Nsereko(NRM) to court by NUP’s Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu.
Today the Mengo based Magistrate Court has ordered Fred Nyanzi Sentamu, elder brother of National Unity Platform (NUP) president and former Presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi to pay Kampala Central Member of Parliament Muhammed Nsereko sh38.5m as costs following his petition for a recount of the votes.“
After the curt ruling, a jubilant Muhammad Nsereko went out on social media to celebrate winning the petition.
“Justice is finally served. Court in Mengo has ruled that Nyanzi has to pay me costs of only sh38.5m. Even if it’s small, I will oblige. Thank you, almighty God, for always fighting our battles. They use insults, we use brains,” Nsereko posted on social media.
Nyanzi who stood under the NUP ticket aainst Nsereko, lost by a margin of 1,023. Nsereko won by 16,998 against Nyanzi’s 15,975.
Nyanzi sought a vote recount at the Mengo Chief Magistrate Court but the court dismissed the application noting that most of the grounds Nyanzi had raised for a vote recount were not based on merit.
In March, Nyanzi who was dissatisfied with the ruling petitioned the High Court in Kampala raising 17 grounds including also alleged malpractices by the Electoral Commission.
